A new tourist offer called “The culinary route” will be developed in Tunisia in collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) under the project “Promotion of Sustainable Tourism”. This is an initiative that offers tourists the opportunity to discover the country through its flagship products by inviting them to various culinary experiences.
The culinary culture is a vector of tourist and economic growth. Specialists in tourism, culture and gastronomy have classified it as an essential element of the tourist experience representing an increasingly important part of tourist spending (UNWTO Global Report on Food Tourism).
The “Culinary Route” will be spread over several regions of the Tunisian territory in a perspective of interregional economic development, diversification of the tourism offer and creation of employment opportunities.
In consultation with the working group formed by representatives of trades operating in the theme, namely the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts, the ONTT, the Tunisian Association of Professionals of the Culinary Arts, the Directorate General of Organic Agriculture and the Tunisian Federation of Tourist Restaurants, the choice was made on the following products: “The Cheese of the North-West”, “The Harissa of Cape Bon”, “Olive oil of the Center and Dahar”, “the Wine of the North”, “Dates of the South-West” and “Octopus Kerkennah”.
The implementation of this project will be part of a participatory and inclusive approach with producers, farmers, winemakers, artisans and restaurateurs in the areas concerned.
The planned actions will focus on the development of new culinary experiences, the improvement of existing offers as well as capacity building of tourism operators. They will also be supported by a communication and marketing strategy that will ensure the promotion of the culinary route and its visibility in the outbound markets.
The project “Promotion of Sustainable Tourism” is a joint action of the European Union under the programme “Tounes Wijhetouna” and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by the GIZ in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts.
The GIZ implements development projects in the context of Tunisian-German cooperation. Its work focuses on the development of rural areas, sustainable management of natural resources, renewable energy and energy efficiency, sustainable economic development and employment promotion, as well as regional development, local governance and democracy.
