Tozeur: New investors begin first salt mining trial at Chott Jerid

Three out of twelve investors who have received permits to start salt extraction and processing units in Chott Jerid (Tozeur governorate) have just begun testing, said regional director of the International Development Agency Industry and Innovation Ayetallah Knouzi. The rest is under review and updating feasibility studies for their projects.

He said 13 investors, including 12 from Tozeur and one from Kebili, had recently obtained authorisations from the Ministry of Industry and Energy. Until last year, only one company had a monopoly on this activity in the region.

Several promoters claim that these authorisations were granted after numerous pressures on the National Office of Mines (ONM), which prevented investment in this promising sector despite the many files of intentions to invest in the extraction, operation and export of Chott Jerid’s salt, deposited for more than two years with this administration.

Such projects are of high added value in that each project will have to provide between 30 and 40 fixed jobs and ensure an annual production of about 100 tonnes of large varieties of salts for export.

The Chott Jerid salt works, which occupy an area of more than 5,000 square meters, have been classified by the Ramsar system since 2007 as ecologically significant wetlands.
