Trade balance deficit of industrial sector reaches 26%

The trade balance of the industrial sector registered a 4600.6-million-Tunisian-dinar (MTD) deficit during the first half of 2017 against a 3641.4-MTD deficit during the same period of 2016, i.e. a deficit that worsened to reach 26.34%, according to the Agency for the Promotion of Industry and Innovation (APII).

Exports of the industrial sector edged up by 10.7% till May 2017 compared to the same period in 2016, generating revenues estimated at 14,502.6MTD against 13,105.9 the previous year.

Imports rose by 14.1% with 19,103.2MTD during the first half of 2017 against 16,747.3MTD during the same period in 2016.

The increase registered at the level of exports is mainly due to the mechanical and electrical industries with exports reaching 7482.8MTD against 6447.8MTD during the first six months of 2016, i.e. a 16.1% rise, the APII explained in its official website.

Exports of the agri food industries also climbed up by 5.8%, from 1011.7MTD to 1070.7MTD during the first half of 2017.

The textile and clothing industries’ exports also edged up by 11.2% reaching 3024.3MTD against 2720.2MTD during the first six months of 2016.

The same applies for exports of the leather and footwear industries which increased by 7.6% with 613.4MTD against 569.9MTD during the first half of 2016.

Exports of the miscellaneous industries sector edged up by 12.4% with 1061.6MTD against 944.2MTD during the first six months of 2016.

According to APII’s statistics, industrial imports also edged up in all sectors. These increases vary between 7.1% for the leather and footwear industries and 58.7% for the agri food industries.
