Trade unionists will block plan to sell state-owned enterprises (Taboubi)

Secretary General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Nourredine Taboubi said Saturday that trade unionists will continue to defend the public sector and will block the plan to sell public enterprises.

“The UGTT is once again challenging the government to list the different public enterprises that are facing financial difficulties,” Taboubi added at a workers’ rally in front of the headquarters in Sousse.

“Our organization is committed to the thoughtful and responsible dialogue with the Chahed government even if this government is not serious and has no alternatives,” he pointed out.

The union official announced, on this occasion, that the UGTT will stage a series of workers’ rallies in several regions that will be crowned by a big rally in Tunis to reiterate the opposition to the government’s programme on the reform of the social funds.

They also seek to denounce the campaign of demonization that some MPs are carrying out against the militants of the labour organisation, he added.

“It is out of the question today to sow discord between the Tunisian people and the trade union organisation,” he warned, saying he will denounce the political parties that use the crisis between the education union and the Ministry of Education to conduct their election campaigns.

Regarding the deterioration of the socio-economic situation in the country, he said, only the government is responsible for it, stressing that all the institutions and structures of the state are riddled with corruption.

He added that the labour organisation, which will begin late next month, the social negotiations in the public sector and the civil service will work to defend the rights of employees and improve their purchasing power.
