Trader Faces Court for Injuring Carpenter’s Eye in GHC200 Dispute

Accra: A trader who allegedly thrust his walking stick into a carpenter’s left eye has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court. Adam Zakaria, 42, had given GHC200 to the carpenter, Eric Djan, to fix his leaking roof, but Djan allegedly failed to complete the work. Zakaria, charged with causing harm, pleaded not guilty.

According to Ghana News Agency, Presiding Judge Isaac Addo granted him GHC50,000 bail with two sureties and ordered the prosecution to comply with disclosure rules. Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer stated that Djan, a resident of Danquah Circle, Osu, received payment from Zakaria in October 2024 but did not fix the leakage.

On January 20, 2025, Zakaria confronted Djan at Danquah Roundabout over the delay. Djan explained he had been unwell and unable to complete the work. “This resulted in a quarrel between the two, and in the process, the accused thrust his walking stick into the complainant’s left eye,” the prosecution stated.

Djan, bleeding profusely, was rushed to the Police Hospital, where doctors found his vision had become blurred and recommended surgery. Zakaria was arrested on May 8, 2025.
