Awalavi: A tragic road accident on the Accra-Aflao highway, at Awalavi in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region, has resulted in several passengers sustaining various degrees of injuries. The accident occurred after a 15-seater transit minibus with the registration number GT 5645-21 lost control and hit a pavement metal along the road.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Emmanuel Awudza, an eyewitness, reported that the bus, which was traveling from Accra to Aflao at high speed, lost control and swerved off its lane before colliding with the pavement metal. Awudza recounted, “I was on my rice farm along the Accra-Aflao highway, and I heard a sudden loud sound of a tyre burst. Suddenly, the vehicle lost control and hit the metal along the road as well.” He noted that the driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle after the back tyre burst, leading to the accident.
Mr. Awudza explained that the driver and several passengers suffered injuries to the head, arms, legs, and other body parts and were taken to the nearby Weta Hospital in the municipality for medical attention. He commended the residents of Awalavi for their prompt assistance in transporting the injured passengers to the hospital, even before the Afife Police arrived.
He urged drivers on the Accra-Aflao highway to exercise caution, especially during nighttime and early morning travel, to prevent accidents that could jeopardize passengers’ lives. Madam Sandra Mileba, a businesswoman and passenger on the bus, expressed gratitude that there were no fatalities, stating, “We boarded the vehicle at Tema roundabout and we are going to Aflao, I can’t really tell how this accident happened but we thank God there is no fatality as at now.”
Madam Mileba also mentioned that some passengers’ valuable items, such as mobile phones, were missing after the accident and appealed to the public to assist the police in investigating the incident. The Ghana Police Service has yet to comment on the accident.
