Trkiye Condemns Israeli Intervention Against Gaza Aid Flotilla in International Waters

Ankara: Trkiye on Monday condemned Israel's intervention against the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, describing it as 'a new act of piracy.' In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Israeli forces intervened against the flotilla, which was carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

According to Anadolu Agency, the ministry condemned the intervention as an act of piracy and emphasized the international nature of the flotilla, which included citizens from nearly 40 countries. The ministry stated that Israel's actions would not deter international solidarity with the Palestinian people and called for the immediate cessation of the intervention and the unconditional release of detained participants.

The ministry further mentioned that Turkish authorities were undertaking necessary measures to ensure the safe return of Turkish citizens aboard the flotilla, coordinating closely with other countries involved.

The Israeli army's actions, which took place in international waters, were broadcast live, showing Israeli naval forces intercepting the vessels in the flotilla. Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the detained activists were being transferred to a navy ship described as a 'floating prison' before being taken to the port of Ashdod.

The Global Sumud aid flotilla demanded 'safe passage' for its humanitarian mission to the Gaza Strip and accused Israel of 'illegal acts of piracy.' The flotilla's statement highlighted that Israeli forces attacked the first of its boats 'in broad daylight' and intercepted the fleet with military vessels.

Additionally, AK Party Spokesperson Omer Celik condemned the intervention on US social media company X, labeling Israel's actions as 'an inhumane act of barbarism' and calling for global opposition to the intervention from entities that value law, justice, and human rights.
