Tunis to host new festival of Mediterranean cinema “Manarat” July 9-15

A new festival of the Mediterranean cinema in Tunisia entitled Manarat will take place in Tunis from July 9 to 15,” Director of the National Film and Image Centre (French: CNCI) Chiraz Laatiri announced.

The announcement was made at a meeting held Friday on the fringes of the 71st Cannes Festival’s events. Manarat’s maiden session will be headed by Tunisian Producer Dorra Bouchoucha.

The festival will have a Mediterranean dimension and will be a meeting place of creators and those interested in the cinema in Mediterranean countries, Bouchoucha pointed out.

This new festival will be organised by the CNCI in co-operation with the Tunisian-French Cultural Centre and the French Cinema Centre, she added.

Despite their differences, Mediterranean countries share historic ties such as Carthage and Rome. In addition to the maritime trade via the Mediterranean that was very dense between peoples of the Mediterranean at that time, she indicated.

Bouchoucha further voiced wish to see the Manarat festival become a destination of creators from the two shores of the Mare Nostrum and to contribute to the removal of geographic borders.

CNCI Director Chiraz Laatiri, for her part, stressed that this new festival will be an important event that will gather competences from the different Arab and European film centres to exchange expertise in the film field and learn about the experiences of Mediterranean countries.
