TUNISAIR: new direct flight linking Tunis to Cotonou to be officially inaugurated on December 13, 2017

“The new Tunisair direct link between Tunis and Cotonou (Benin) will be officially inaugurated on December 13, 2017”, and the company plans to open two new sub-Saharan lines in 2018 to Douala in Cameroon and Ndjamena in Chad, Youssef Kekli, Central Director of Communication and External Relations in Tunisair told TAP on Friday.

The national carrier planned two flights a week between Tunis and Cotonou, which will take place every Wednesday and Saturday, he said, adding that this new airline is part of Tunisair’s commercial policy aimed to open up more to the African market.

The national carrier also plans to launch by the end of 2017 a new line to Khartoum (Sudan), in addition to the seven lines launched in recent years, to Dakar (Senegal), Nouakchott (Mauritania), Bamako ( Mali), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Niamey (Niger) and Conakry (Guinea).

In 2019, the company will launch lines to two countries in English-speaking Africa: Accra (Ghana) and Lagos (Nigeria), while in 2020, it plans to expand its African network in Libreville (Gabon), added Kekli.

At the end of September 2017, Tunisair’s transportation revenues “increased by 22% to 918.699 million dinars (MD), compared to the same period last year.

About 2 million 730 thousand passengers were transported during this period, as part of regular flights, charter and pilgrimage. The company’s activities to African countries account for 14.3% of its passenger traffic, according to the quarterly activity indicators of the national airline.

However, Tunisair, which currently accounts for nearly 42% of the Tunisian air transport market, saw its “fleet punctuality” indicator deteriorate from 53.1% in 2016 to 42.4% in 2017.
