Tunisia called to produce statistical data to achieve UN SDGs (Lamia Zribi)

Tunisia is expected to produce statistical data to measure the progress of the country in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, said President of the National Council of Statistics (CNS) Lamia Zribi.

“This goal can only be achieved by strengthening the institutional and legislative framework, in addition to modernising the institutions and technical mechanisms to produce these statistical indicators,” the official said.

Speaking at a workshop held Tuesday in Tunis on “the institutional environment, cooperation, dialogue and partnerships for the production and use of sustainable development indicators”, Zribi stressed that the objective is to develop Tunisia’s capacities in the production and use of data and statistical indicators to measure the degree of achievement of these objectives.

For the Director-General of the National Statistics Institute (INS) Hedi Saidi, this workshop will precisely strengthen the capacity of national statistical institutes that “do not yet master the production techniques of several new indicators, such as statistics on security, peace, the environment, the elderly … “.

He added that the aim is to present, at the level of the The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) countries, recommendations aimed at adopting a common approach to the methodology for achieving these objectives, in particular, the identification of the necessary sources of financing. in coordination with the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

These recommendations will then be discussed at the 49th session of the UN Statistical Commission to be held in New York from 6 to 9 March 2018, the official said

For his part, Juraj Riecan, Director of the Statistics Division at ESCWA, recalled that the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has modernised the techniques of data processing and use of statistics, called (data) to meet the expectations of users, in order to increase their number.

In this connectio, he recommended developing the infrastructure and using several sources to produce the statistical data.

The three-day workshop is organised at the initiative of the INS and the ESCWA.
