Tunisia capital of Maghreb and Arab military medicine May 3-5

The city of Hammamet hosts from May 3 to 5 the 5th Pan-Arab Congress and the 5th Maghreb Congress of Military Medicine that welcome more than 450 doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians and paramedics, military and civilians from Tunisia and 18 other countries.

Minister of National Defense Abdelkrim Zbidi told TAP, on the sidelines of the opening of the two congresses attended by Health Minister Imed Hammami, that the meetings were held under the patronage of the President of the Republic reflect all the interest that Tunisia has in military medicine.

The event aims to strengthen cooperation relations and promote exchange of expertise with Arab countries in order to establish a quality military health system.

These meetings, which are part of further training, include topics as important as medical intervention in times of crisis and disaster, as well as disaster relief and assistance operations and their medical and medical psychological care, “he said.

The minister also said that a significant part of the conference’s work will be dedicated to medical ethics in times of crisis and disaster.

On another level, Zbidi said that the cooperation between his department and the Ministry of Health is daily and open to health institutions in order to provide quality care to citizens and to remedy the lack of certain specialties in health military institutions.

Military medicine in Tunisia has recognised expertise nationwide and worldwide, as part of international cooperation or UN missions, he said.

In another connection, the minister reassured Tunisians that the State structures and the Ministry of Defense have taken all the necessary steps to ensure the smooth running of the next national events, namely the municipal elections, the end-of-year examinations, the month of Ramadan and the summer season.

He noted that Tunisian-American military cooperation in the fight against terrorism, organised crime and illegal activities has seen a quantitative and qualitative leap. This cooperation includes training, joint exercises, intelligence exchange and equipment support.

In this context, Zbidi announced that the ministry’s fleet will be strengthened in the coming months by new helicopters and that two frigates on the high seas have been received. Two others will arrive in Tunisia before the end of 2018.
