Tunisia chosen to host IFJ’s next congress in 2019

Tunisia will play host to the next (30th) Congress of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) due in 2019. Tunisia will thus be the first Arab and African country to organise this event on its soil.

The vote took place on the fringes of the General Assembly of the IFJ Executive Committee held April 28-30 in Moscow.

“This consecration is the fruit of a solid technical file on which the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) worked for several months to propose a clear vision and convince of its ability to organise a congress of such scope,” SNJT pointed out Saturday in a statement.

For the Union, the state of freedoms of expression and press in Tunisia which are the nerve of its democratic transition has supported the Tunisian candidacy.

For the next two years, the Tunisian State will be closely watched by international unions and journalist organisations, the same source estimates.

This will include notably the assessment of the degree of Tunisia’s involvement in partnerships with professional organisations in favour of a free, independent and pluralistic press.
