Tunisia drops 5 places in 2018 Environmental Performance Index

Tunisia ranks 58th out of 180 countries around the world, falling 5 places compared to 2016, in the 2018 Environmental Performance Index (EPI).

The country scored 62.35 / 100, according to the EPI, that scores the countries from 0 = worst to 100 = best and provides every two years, indicators on their performance to move closer to established environmental policy objectives.

In the latest ranking “IPE 2016,” Tunisia ranked 53rd with a score of 77.28.

At the regional level, Tunisia ranks 4th in the Middle East and North Africa region, behind Morocco (3rd) and well before Egypt (7th) and Algeria (12th).

This ranking is based on the observation of 24 indicators grouped into 10 thematic categories covering environmental health and the ecosystem (health impacts/ environment, air pollution, water resources, biodiversity / habitat, natural resources and climate change).

Switzerland tops the index with a score of 87.42, followed by France, Denmark, Malta, Sweden, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Austria, Ireland, and Finland.

Developed by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy (YCELP) and the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University, in collaboration with the World Economic Forum, the 2018 Index reveals a tension between two fundamental dimensions of sustainable development: the environmental health, which grows with economic growth and prosperity, and the vitality of ecosystems subject to industrialisation and urbanisation.

To this end, the report recommends good governance as a necessary factor to balance these two dimensions and to ensure the sustainability of ecosystems. It also highlights the progress made in protecting marine and terrestrial biomes and in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the past decade.

The last place in this ranking is held by Burundi with a score of 27.43 / 100.
