“Tunisia First” Movement calls for postponement of municipal elections

The founding committee of Tunisia First movement called for the postponement of municipal elections, saying the current situation is not conducive to their holding on schedule (December 17, 2017).

In a statement following its meeting on Thursday, the party considers that the organisation of municipal elections will not be possible until Parliament, the government and the electoral body assume their responsibility and create conditions favorable to the success of these pools.

Members of the founding committee of “Tunisia First” call, in this respect, on the parliament to urgently adopt the code of local authorities before the elections and the Ministry of Justice to hasten the installation of all regional administrative courts to ensure monitoring, control and arbitration activities and to guarantee transparent and democratic elections.

They also stressed the need to complement the establishment of the regional audit chambers, urging the government to intervene to ensure the neutrality of regional and local administrations and keep them away from political considerations.

According to “Tunisia First”, the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) is not ready for municipal elections in view of the pressures and attempts to manipulate it which threaten to compromise its independence and to block its process.
