Tunisia needs to unleash investment (Majoul)

Tunisia needs to unlock the investment and not subject it to taxation, whether for the creation of new businesses or for extensions, to combat the important and structural problems of the national economy, President of the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (UTICA) Samir Majoul said on Wednesday.

In his remarks at the National Symposium on Major Reforms, Majoul called for speeding up the adoption of a law on economic emergencies, removing obstacles to blocked projects and reconsidering the public-private partnership law and export incentives through the establishment of a complementary programme in this field.

He recommended reviewing certain trade agreements and reforming the tax system through broadening of the taxpayer base to include those active in the informal sector, in addition to the implementation of administrative reform and the simplification of procedures to improve the performance of the public service and speeding up the treatment of the problem of Rades port and all the logistics zones.

He also proposed organising a national dialogue on the theme of energy and mines to achieve a national consensus to restore the pace of phosphate and oil production to show more interest for renewable energies and especially the solar one in addition to the revision of the exchange code.

Minister in charge of Major Reforms Taoufik Rajhi said the government has launched a campaign to publicise major reforms.

He said this symposium is part of this campaign to frame the dialogue and exchange of views on four areas of reform: the reform of public institutions, the civil service, social funds and the subsidy system.

He emphasised the importance of the participatory approach adopted to deal with these major areas of reform that will culminate in a set of practical measures.
