Tunisia, Portugal sign seven agreements

Tunisia and Portugal, on Monday, signed seven agreements in the areas of civil protection, judicial cooperation, transport, education, scientific research, vocational training and employment as well as an agreement on a Euros 20-million credit line.

The agreements were signed at the Government Palace in Kasbah, in the presence of the two countries’ prime ministers, Youssef Chahed and Antonio Luis Santos da Costa.

Youssef Chahed said the meeting with his Portuguese counterpart focused on ways to foster cultural exchanges and co-operation in the fight against terrorism, stressing the similarity between the Tunisian and Portuguese experiences.

He commended Portugal for its assistance to Tunisia in recent years, paying tribute to the country for not issuing travel restrictions for its nationals to Tunisia after the 2015 terrorist attacks.

The Tunisian Premier also said the meeting focused on cultural exchange, including the teaching of the Portuguese language in Tunisia.

“We also talked at this high-level meeting about the vision of President Beji Caid Essebsi for the settlement of the Libyan crisis based on the rapprochement of positions of the various protagonists,” he added.

For his part, the Portuguese Prime Minister commended the success of the democratic transition process in Tunisia, emphasising the cultural dimension of bilateral relations, including the consolidation of the teaching of the Portuguese language in schools and the setting up of the digital school project in Tunisia.
