Tunisia is committed to its fraternal and historical relations with all the Arab Maghreb countries and the principle of positive neutrality in the Western Sahara issue, Adviser to the President of the Republic Walid Hajem told TAP Friday evening .
He stressed that “Tunisia considers the Maghreb space as an important achievement and a strategic choice that must be strengthened in collaboration with all the brotherly countries of the region, based on the conviction of the unity of destiny and the need for joint action to achieve the aspirations of the people.
Hajem reaffirmed Tunisia’s concern to “give priority to the path of dialogue in the Western Sahara issue in order to achieve a satisfactory political solution that strengthens the stability of the region and opens promising horizons to strengthen cooperation between the member countries of the Arab Maghreb Union and consolidate their ability to meet common challenges at the level of security, economy and development.
Based on its commitment to international legality and the role of the United Nations in preserving peace and security in the world, Tunisia “reiterates its full support for the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-General to achieve a political solution in the Western Sahara and its support for the important role of the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO),” he added.
The adviser to the President of the Republic said, in this vein, “Tunisia welcomes the appointment of the new Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura” and considers that this is an “important step towards the impetus of the political process” and a “positive momentum for a peaceful solution.
He also expressed Tunisia’s satisfaction at the UN Security Council resolution released on Friday, and which extends the mandate of MINURSO for one year.
