Tunisia receives IFAD’s Gender Award 2021

(TAP) – Tunisia has just received the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gender Award 2021, for the Near East, North Africa, Europe and Central Asia, through the Agropastoral Value Chains Project in the Governorate of Médenine (PRODEFIL), announced the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries.

This annual prize, awarded on October 15, on the International Day of Rural Women, aims to honor women and girls who play a crucial role and contribute to gender transformation and empowerment of women in rural areas.

PRODEFIL is a local and inclusive community development project, focused on value chains of promising sectors, particularly the sheep meat, goat and camel, the integration of pastoral and agricultural systems and the development of products and services of land.

It aims to “improve the living conditions of the vulnerable rural population and create new employment opportunities through the strengthening the resilience of agro-pastoral production systems and developing associated sectors”.

This project has improved the standard of living of rural women, through the creation of permanent jobs, especially for women graduates.

The project area covers three delegations of the governorate of Medenine, namely Ben Guerdene, Beni Khedéche and Sidi Makhlouf, which corresponds to a total population of 107,543 inhabitants, including 52.5% of women.
