Since the beginning of the year, 732 people have lost their lives and 4,891 have been injured in road accidents, according to the National Observatory of Road Safety.
3,538 traffic accidents were recorded between January 1 and September 24, 2021, compared to 3,662 in the same period in 2020.
Despite a slight drop in the number of accidents, the number of deaths has unfortunately increased with 39 more victims than last year, said spokesman for the observatory Mourad Jouini.
July and August 2021 were the deadliest months, with 46 road accidents reported last August, killing 105 people and wounding 500 and 359 accidents in July killing 89 and injuring 488.
As usual, the governorate of Tunis (587 accidents and 87 deaths) was the most affected, followed by the governorate of Nabeul (316 accidents) and Ben Arous (240).
As for the number of deaths, the governorate of Sfax comes second (68 dead and 2012 injured), followed by the governorate of Nabeul (47 dead and 446 injured) and Ben Arous (34 dead and 296 injured).
Excessive speed, inattentiveness at the wheel or when crossing the road remain the main causes of fatal traffic accidents, according to data provided by the observatory.
