Tunisia takes part in African inter-ministerial meeting on Libya in New York

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi attended Friday an African inter-ministerial meeting on Libya organised at the invitation of Head of the Presidential Council of Libya Mohamed al-Menfi.

The meeting saw the participation of FMs of Security Council African member states, member countries of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya and the representative of the AU to the UN.

It fits within the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York on September 21 to 27.

Light was shed on the political process in Libya and upcoming events, including presidential and legislative elections in December 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Jerandi said Tunisia is keen to continue supporting UN, international and regional efforts to underprin the peace process in Libya in such a way as to achieve peace and stability.

He stressed, in this vein, the key role of the AU and neighbour countries in supporting the process of national reconciliation and inter-Libyan dialogue while respecting Libya’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.

Al-Menfi reviewed progress made in the political process and the unification of Libyan national institutions. He stressed the need to strengthen Libyan unity and the foundations of peace and stability.

He also underlined the importance of the role of neighbouring countries and the African Union in supporting the political process.

Participating delegations addressed the issue of the imperative and immediate departure of foreign fighters and mercenaries as well as the scaled-up cooperation and coordination among neighbouring countries to tackle common regional challenges.
