Tunisia will continue «honouring its international commitments» and «defending the rule of law and the values of democracy and human rights,» Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad Othman Jerandi said on Thursday.

He was speaking on the phone with Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Sophie Wilmès.

The Belgian diplomat said her country remains attentive to the health situation in Tunisia and institutional stability.

«It is necessary to protect the democratic achievements and listen to the aspirations of the people,» she announced in a statement.

Jerandi noted the exceptional situation Tunisia faces, dictated by the need to «preserve social peace,» which is threatened by recent political developments in the country, the Ministry said in a statement.

The measures decided on July 25 by the President of the Republic are aimed at restoring stability in Tunisia and ensuring the continuity of institutions based on the provisions of the Constitution. The presidential measures are «constitutional,» he affirmed.

Jerandi highlighted «the President’s attachment to republican values, the democratic process, fundamental freedoms and human rights.»

He expressed gratitude for Belgium’s support to Tunisia in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as at the level of bilateral cooperation and within the European institutions.

The two sides agreed to continue consultations on the most important current issues in the interest of the friendly Tunisian and Belgian peoples.
