Tunisia wants UNESCO world heritage status for Jugurtha Tableland

The first steps towards listing the Jugurtha Tableland, governorate of El Kef, as a World Heritage Site were undertaken. The Cultural Affairs Ministry prepared the technical file to have the site inscribed on UNESCO preliminary list, it said Thursday in a press release.

The Ministry worked out an action plan that involved all stakeholders in the field of culture, heritage and scientific research. This is a crucial stage that helps exchange points of view and share experiences to bring the undertaking to fruition under the best conditions.

The inscription of Jugurtha Tableland on UNESCO preliminary list is of scientific importance for Tunisia has not so far had an archaeological spot that is both a natural and cultural site inscribed.

Jugurtha Tableland, 4km from Kalaat Senan, El Kef, is a rock formation that stretches over 80 ha.

Twelve Tunisian sites feature on UNESCO preliminary list. But, no Tunisian monument or site has managed to get UNESCO world heritage status over the last twenty years.
