Nearly 600,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines will be sent to Tunisia under an agreement signed at a meeting Wednesday between the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.
During the meeting held at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Ghebreyesus highlighted the efforts made to meet the Tunisian government’s request to speed up the dispatch of vaccines before November and December.
According to a press release of the Prime Ministry, 100,000 doses will be sent in June and July and nearly 250,000 doses in September, while nearly 250,000 will arrive by the end of 2021.
The WHO Chief expressed the organisation’s readiness to increase the doses requested by Tunisia, saying that an agreement will be reached with the Tunisian government to strengthen the capacity of experts in the manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines.
Speaking to reporters, Mechichi pointed out that the meeting was an opportunity to give an overview about Tunisia’s health sector and purchase more vaccines.
