Tunisian banks willing to finance renewable energy projects

“Tunisian banks have expressed their willingness to finance projects of power production using renewable energy, said Minister of Energy, Mining and Renewable Energies Hela Sheikhrouhou.

Speaking at a workshop on financing power production projects using renewable energies held Tuesday in Tunis, She added that projects of the kind will be carried out between 2017 and 2020, as part of the programme of production of electricity using renewable energies which seeks to create nearly 1,000 Megawatts (MW).

The private sector will contribute to the installation of a 620-MW capacity with a cost of around 1,500 million Tunisian dinars.

Sheikhrouhou pointed out that renewable energy projects will be carried out either under the concession system (installation of 100 MW of solar energy and 100 MW of photovoltaic energy), or the licencing system (installation of 120 MW of solar energy and 90 MW of wind energy).

President of the Tunisian Association of Banks and Financial Institutions, Ahmed El Karam, said financial institutions have confirmed their commitment to invest in renewable energy.

“These institutions will contribute to the achievement of projects because by they help guarantee regional development in different parts of the country and are job-generating,” according to him.

The law authorising the production of electricity using renewable energies was adopted in 2015. The Decree of August 24, 2016 lays down the terms and conditions for the realisation of projects for the production and sale of electricity using renewable energies.
