Tunisian exports up 40% since early 2018 (Youssef Chahed)

Since the beginning of 2018, Tunisian exports have increased by 40%, in addition to an improvement in the coverage of imports by exports by 10 points, said Friday Premier Youssef Chahed.

Speaking at a plenary session of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) dedicated to dialogue with the government on the general situation in the country, Chahed said that the number of tourists will reach 8 million in 2018, against 2.5 million in 2016.

He added that the rate of reservations has reached 100%, during this season. Tourist receipts will have to increase by 25%, said Chahed, adding that several other sectors, such as textiles and manufacturing industries, have already seen a revival of their indicators.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the improvement of several economic indicators, including Tunindex, which recorded an increase of 14.5% in 2017.

According to Chahed, the problem the government faces is public finance, which requires reforms and structural solutions that take time. “This situation represents a combination of problems that have occurred in previous years,” he said.

He added: “As long as the problem is not solved, fears about the country’s economic growth will persist.”

The PM stressed that the improvement of the state of the public finances requires the materialisation of the structural reforms in all the public enterprises, besides the system of subsidy and the social funds.
