Tunisian Flag Celebrates 199th Anniversary

Tunis:Tunisia will mark the 199th anniversary of its national flag's creation on Tuesday, commemorating a symbol that has endured nearly two centuries of history. The flag was designed on October 20, 1827, by order of Bey Hussein II and was officially adopted a few years later.

According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the flag has been preserved through various historical phases, including the French protectorate and after the country's independence. It remains a potent emblem of Tunisian identity and sovereignty. Historians view the flag as a marker of political evolution, reflecting the influence of different civilizations that have shaped Tunisia.

The flag's design, featuring a crescent, star, and central disc, connects to an ancient heritage predating the Ottoman era. The adoption of the flag coincided with a period of military reorganization and the assertion of Tunisian autonomy. While there are differing accounts of its exact date of creation, historians agree that it emerged in the early 19th century, inspired by the Ottoman model but distinct in its elements.

The Tunisian flag has maintained its design since the 19th century, surviving through significant political changes and continuing as a symbol of national unity. It was officially recognized in the Constitution of June 1, 1959, and its specifications were detailed in a 1999 legislative act.

Today, the flag is entrusted to the army and is central to national ceremonies. It is celebrated annually through events like the "Flag Parade" in Tunis, involving various national organizations, reinforcing its role as a symbol of Tunisia's continuity, identity, and sovereignty.
