A three-day training workshop on biological safety and health security opened Tuesday in Tunis as part of the Tunisian-German partnership.

The event is held by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in collaboration with Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology and Robert Koch Institute, Germany.

It is geared towards raising the awareness of Tunisian health professionals in the army, police and health facilities about biotechnology threats, Coordinator of the Tunisian-German project on protection against biological threats Dennis Rontgen told TAP.

The training, which is the second phase of this project, will enable participants to respond to a crisis biological situation and identify quickly pathogenic germs.

Participants representing the Defence, Interior and Health Ministries and civil protection will be briefed about threats in relation to bioterrorism, said Associate Professor of Preventive and Community Medicine at the Directorate- General of Military Health Riadh Allani.

A high-security mobile laboratory was handed over to the Directorate-General of Military Health and the Military Hospital in the first phase of this project to help respond to natural diseases and the deliberate introduction of dangerous pathogens, he indicated.

Secretary of State for Health Sonia Ben Cheikh reminded of the signing in 2015 of an agreement to seal Tunisian-German partnership in biological safety.

A national strategy and an action plan were worked out to prevent and cope with bioterrorist threats or accidents, such as Ebola, she said.
