Tunisian Hayet Ketat Guermazi ALECSO director-general candidate

Tunisia has nominated Hayet Ketat Guermazi, Doctor of History, for the post of Director-General of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) whose official headquarters are in Tunis, well-informed sources told TAP.

The nomination of a woman to head this Arab and regional body constitutes a will of the Republic of Tunisia to strengthen the role of women and establish the principle of gender parity in decision-making positions, said the same sources.

AlECSO will hold an extraordinary general assembly on September 26, 2017 in Kuwait, after which a new director-general will be elected for a four-year term, renewable once.

In addition to Tunisia, seven other Arab countries submitted their nominations, namely Kuwait, Libya, Jordan, Mauritania, Bahrain, Iraq and Yemen, who has nominated Dr. Mohammed Abdul Bari al-Qudsi, Assistant Director-General, according to the same sources.

The position of the Director-General of ALECSO has been vacant since the death of Kuwaiti Abdullah Muhareb on May 4, 2017. The later Muhareb had headed organisation since February 1, 2013 after being reappointed for a second term following the 23rd extraordinary session of the ALECSO in Tunis.

Tunisia hopes to see the first woman to head the ALECSO elected, in the person of Hayet Ketat Guermazi.

Two Tunisians, Mongi Bousnina and Mohamed Aziz Ben Achour had served as directors general of ALECSO between 2002 and 2013.
