Tunisian Maher Hasnaoui’s “Khalaa” wins golden Hadrumetum at 2017 FIFEJ

The 12th edition of the Sousse International Film Festival for Children and Youth (FIFEJ) closed Wednesday by handing over the golden Hadrumetum award to Tunisian Maher Hasnaoui’s film “Khalaa” as part of the national first short-film competition.

During the closing ceremony, attended by Culture Minister Mohamed Zine el Abidine, jury members including Tunisian filmmaker Selma Baccar, Palestinian Michel Khleifi, Algerian Rim Takoucht and Italian Paolo Beneventi, commended the quality of the award-winning film from the point of view of scenario and production, depicting in a subtle and touching style a certain category of youths from marginalised regions.

The silver Hadrumetum was awarded to Sana Jaziri’s film “El barouita,” while the bronze Hadrumetum went to Yessine Bouchanab’s “Clochard.”

As for the international competition, the prize of best feature film for children was awarded to Canadian film The Dog Who Stopped the War of Andre Melancon. The best short film for children went to English film “Stick man” of Jeroen Jaspaert and Daniel Snaddon.

Algerian director Rachid Benhadj won the prize of best feature film for youths for his film “Najm el Jazaeir” (Algeria’s star), while the prize of best short film for youths was awarded to Italian film “il Silenzio” (The Silence) by Franoosh Samadi and Ali Asgari.

Twenty eight feature and short films in four categories (competitions of short films for children, for youths and feature films for children and for youths) as well as 17 films competing in the national first short film competition took part in the festival held March 24-29.
