“Tunisia’s acceptance of civil society recommendations on Universal Periodic Review is theoretical” (LTDH)

Tunisia’s acceptance of the civil society recommendations on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) remains theoretical, said President of the Tunisian League of Human Rights Jamel M’sallem.

He was speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday in Tunis, at the initiative of the Civil Coalition for Individual Liberties, to present the civil society’s report on the UPR before the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

M’sallem highlighted the contribution of civil society in suggesting serious recommendations, as a result of several meetings on freedoms in Tunisia and the achievements made since the first UPR held in 2017.

He added that recommendations will be made to the Human Rights Council which, in turn, will present its recommendations to the Tunisian State.

The second Universal Periodic Review of Tunisia will take place next November in Tunis.

For her part, coordinator of the Civil Coalition for Individual Liberties Oumayma Jabnouni stressed that «the unconstitutional situation in the country favours violations of fundamental and individual liberties.»

She considered that the situation is “very alarming,» in the absence of consultation with civil society and parliament to examine the draft laws proposed by organisations.

The Universal Periodic Review will be an opportunity to assess the extent to which the state is committed to implementing the recommendations listed by the UPR report held in 2017, she said.
