Tunis: Tunisia has marked a significant milestone with the official inclusion of Dahar Geopark on the UNESCO Global Geoparks List. This distinction, achieved on April 15, 2026, during the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris, establishes Dahar as the first geopark in Tunisia and one of the few in Africa and the Arab world. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the Dahar Geopark spans 6,375 km² across the governorates of Gabès, Tataouine, and Médenine in southeastern Tunisia. It is renowned for its exceptional geological, paleontological, and cultural significance. The site features the only Upper Permian marine outcrop on the African continent, located at Mount Tebaga, formed over 250 million years ago. This unique geological heritage led to its recognition by UNESCO, further positioning Tunisia as a key player in cultural and eco-responsible tourism. The geopolitical significance of Dahar Geopark is underscored by its inclusion as one of 241 Global Geoparks across 51 countries. Dhia Kha led, Tunisia's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, emphasized the strategic importance of this designation in preserving and promoting Tunisia's geocultural heritage. The recognition is anticipated to invigorate regional and local development, strengthening Tunisia's appeal as a destination for alternative tourism. The Dahar Geopark is not only a geological marvel but also a testament to millennia-old architectural ingenuity. It includes structures such as cave dwellings, Ksour (fortified granaries), and Jessour (traditional irrigation systems), which demonstrate human adaptation to the arid conditions of the region. The area is home to a population of approximately 330,000, spread across 12 municipalities from Matmata to Remada. Tourism in Dahar is gradually developing, supported by a well-established road network and the proximity of Djerba-Zarzis International Airport.
