Tunis:The country's national pomegranate production is expected to reach 98,000 tonnes in 2026, marking an 8% increase from the 91,000 tonnes recorded in 2025, despite a 15% reduction in cultivated areas due to climatic factors. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, the pomegranate export season for local varieties is set to commence on September 29, 2026. The pricing strategy will be dynamic, with adjustments throughout the season based on prevailing market conditions, supply, and demand. Tarek Tira, Deputy Director of Export Development at the Interprofessional Fruit Group (GIFruits), revealed that the start date for the export season was decided after a meeting with the General Directorate of Agricultural Production, regional agricultural development offices, and industry professionals. This decision was based on close monitoring of pomegranate ripeness and color indicators. In 2025, Tunisia exported 9,791 tonnes of pomegranates valued at approximately TND 34.3 million by December 31, compared to 11 ,459 tonnes worth TND 29.7 million in 2024. This reflects a 15% decrease in export volumes but a 16% increase in export value. GIFruits has also developed a promotional program for Tunisian pomegranates, targeting both local and international markets. Internationally, Tunisia will showcase its produce at various events, including Fruit Attraction in Madrid from October 6-8 and SIAL Paris from October 17-21, along with promotional activities in Italy focusing on the wholesale markets in Rome and Milan. Additionally, a promotional campaign is planned at the Ras Jedir border crossing to enhance awareness of Tunisian pomegranates during the peak season. In 2025, Tunisia exported pomegranates to around 11 countries worldwide.
