Turkish President Stresses Trkiye-EU Strategic Importance Amid Regional Tensions

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday engaged in a phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, emphasizing that escalating tensions in the region underscore the strategic significance of Trkiye-European Union relations. The dialogue, according to the Turkish Communications Directorate, delved into Trkiye-EU ties as well as regional and global developments.

According to Anadolu Agency, Erdogan highlighted Trkiye's ongoing efforts to uphold a ceasefire and promote peace amid the current regional conflict, advocating for the swift reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. He criticized Israel for perpetuating regional conflicts and violating international law through actions he described as piracy, urging increased international pressure on Israel.

Erdogan further noted the potential benefits of integrating Trkiye into Europe's security strategy initiatives. He called for an update to the Turkish-EU Customs Union and advocated for expanded cooperation across various sectors to enhance economic integration and pursue mutual interests.
