Accra: A cargo plane skidded off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport into the sea, killing two people, local media reported on Monday. The Boeing 747, operated by Turkish airline ACT, veered off the runway and slid across the tarmac into the water. Footage shared by local outlets showed the half-submerged aircraft with its tail torn off.
According to Ghana News Agency, the jumbo jet, carrying four crew members, had earlier struck a vehicle on the airport tarmac, which was also thrown into the sea by the force of the collision. The two security personnel in the vehicle, patrolling nearby but off the runway, were killed. The cargo plane crew were rescued unharmed, according to the reports.
The aircraft had arrived from Dubai and reportedly carried no cargo. The airport said weather conditions were suitable for landing. The accident occurred at around 3:50 am (1950 GMT Sunday) and is now under investigation by Hong Kong’s air accident authority.
The crash on the northern runway appears to have had little impact on passenger traffic at Hong Kong Airport, a major international hub. The airport’s website initially showed no significant delays or cancellations and officials did not expect major disruption to the roughly 1,000 scheduled flights, according to the South China Morning Post.
