U-20 WAFU Zone B: Afriyie’s Late Penalty Rescues Draw for Ghana Against Benin

LOME: Ghana's national U-20 team, the Black Satellites, launched their campaign in the WAFU Zone B Championship with a dramatic draw against Benin at the Stade de Kegue in Lome, Togo. A late penalty converted by Jerry Afriyie secured a point for the Ghanaians after a fiercely contested match. According to Ghana News Agency, Jerry Afriyie put the Black Satellites ahead in the 14th minute, but the lead was short-lived. Benin's Modeste Konoudji equalized with a well-executed header in the 26th minute. Ghana's initial dominance waned as the first half progressed, and Benin capitalized on this with a brilliant strike from Gabriel Moulero in the 41st minute, leaving the Black Satellites trailing at halftime. The second half saw both teams displaying attacking prowess, though neither could find the back of the net due to commendable performances by the goalkeepers. Just as Benin seemed poised to take all three points, the referee awarded Ghana a penalty in added time. Afriyie stepped up confidently to convert the spot-kick, ensuring the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The Black Satellites, aiming for qualification to the U-20 AFCON, will seek their first win of the competition in their upcoming match against Niger on Sunday, as the WAFU Zone B Championship continues in Togo.
