UGTT and government resume negotiations, no agreement reached

The Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the government, on Friday, resumed negotiations on social issues, without reaching an agreement due to divergent views between the two sides, said deputy secretary general of the UGTT, Slaheddine Selmi.

Selmi told TAP no agreement was reached during the negotiating session held on Friday including in the issue of wage increases.

The government has presented two proposals on the increase in wages but did not meet the expectations of the central union, said the same source.

The UGTT is demanding a wage increase for public sector employees and the civil service for the years 2021/2022/2023.

The aim is to improve the purchasing power of employees, but the government had proposed in previous negotiations an increase in the years 2023/2024/2025.

Negotiations have also focused on the request to cancel the 1% solidarity contribution, but the government refused this request, citing the country’s economic hardships, added Selmi.
