UGTT’s Noureddine Taboubi Resigns Amid Internal Tensions

Tunis: Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) Noureddine Taboubi has resigned, as announced by Deputy Secretary-General and spokesman Sami Tahri. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, Tahri confirmed that Taboubi submitted his resignation on Tuesday, which was received by the Deputy Secretary General in charge of rules of procedure. However, the reasons behind the resignation remain undisclosed. The resignation will not take effect immediately due to the labour union's internal regulations, which require resignees to be summoned within 15 days to discuss their decision and possibly reconsider. The resignation will only become effective if Taboubi maintains his decision after this period. Tahri mentioned that several meetings will be conducted in the coming days within the union structures to deliberate on the situation and determine the next steps. Meanwhile, he refuted the recent reports about UGTT Deputy Secretary General in charge of the Studies Department, Anouar Ben Kaddour, resigning, stating that no such resignation has been filed. The resignation of Taboubi has surfaced amidst ongoing disagreements within the executive bureau regarding the scheduling and procedures for the next congress, originally set for early 2026, which has heightened internal tensions within the union.
