UN Women congratulates Tunisia on passing of law to combat violence against women

UN Women Representative of the Multi-Country Office for the Maghreb, Leila Rhiwi, on Thursday, congratulated Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Mohamed Ennaceur on the adoption of the Organic Law on the Elimination of all forms of violence against women.

“Tunisia is the first state in the Arab region to affirm so firmly its determination to prevent and respond to that violence so that such acts are no longer permitted and that the Tunisian society allows women and girls to live freely, reads the congratulatory message.

“The UN Women reiterates its appreciation for the strategic and fruitful partnership with the HPR, in particular with the Committee on Women, Family, Children, Youth and the Elderly,” the same source added.

The House of People’s Representatives had adopted last July 26 the draft organic law No. 60-2016 on violence against women with 146 votes and zero abstentions

The bill, which contains 43 articles, lays down provisions to eradicate all forms of gender-based violence in order to achieve gender equality and preserve human dignity.

The bill takes a holistic approach, ranging from prevention to criminal prosecution, sanctions and victim protection and assistance.
