UPL political bureau refuses Slim Riahi’s resignation

The political bureau of the Free Patriotic Union (UPL) expressed, in a statement on Saturday, the refusal of the resignation of its president Slim Riahi, calling on him to reconsider his decision.

Meeting in an extraordinary session since last Thursday, the members of the political bureau decided to send a delegation to meet Slim Riahi and inform him of the party’s refusal of his decision to resign.

The political bureau has also said “strongly indignant at the deterioration of the situation on the political scene, its deviation from standards and its distance from the expectations of Tunisians,” noting that the meeting of the bureau remains open.

UPL President Slim Riahi announced last Thursday his resignation from the party’s presidency without giving reasons for the decision. He had also announced that his deputy Samira Chaouachi had been appointed to hold the presidency of the UPL until the holding of the national congress of the party.
