UPL will not field any municipal election candidates (vice-president)

The Free Patriotic Union (French:UPL) will not participate in May 6 municipal elections, Vice-President Samira Chaouachi Tuesday told a news conference in Tunis.

She urged party supporters to go to the polls and vote for candidates who meet conditions in a bid to make sure these elections do not entail a negative impact on local communities.

Chaouachi said national responsibility requires the party to call upon its supporters to vote. The UPL will not field candidates on the grounds of a legislative gap reflected in failure to finalise the draft code of local communities.

The task allocated to municipal councils is likewise not clear which stands out, altogether with the lack of resources for municipalities, as impediments to devising clear and effective programmes for the promotion of municipalities.

Parties and independent or coalition lists with clear electoral platforms should be voted for, she said in this vein.

In another connection, Chaouachi said the party’s national council meeting is set for March 3-4.

UPL President and founder Slim Riahi’s resignation will top the agenda along with the finalisation of central and regional structures and a date for the founding congress.
