The Republican People’s Union (UPR) on Wednesday reaffirmed its opposition to the “coup” of President of the Republic Kaïs Saïed, called him to “voluntarily step down,” to “stop usurping the identity of president” and to “put an end to the masquerade to which he has led the country.”
The party of former presidential candidate Lotfi Mraïhi stresses the “need to preserve the independence of the judiciary against any political calculation,” calling for the “criminalisation of the defamation of honest judges and any assault against their dignity.”
The party points out in a statement that “there are exceptions as in all sectors” and that “the generalisation aimed at condemning judges is based on false allegations; the goal is to blame the judiciary for the failure of the accuser.”
