UTAP: 170 candidates to contest Central Council election

One hundred and seventy candidates will vie for the membership of the Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (French: UTAP) Central Council at the 16th Congress of the organisation set for May 8-11 in Tozeur, southwestern Tunisia, said Vice President in charge of structures Moez Ben Zaghdane.

Zaghdane said 380 conventioneers will elect 100 candidates out of the initial 170; those elected to the Central Council will elect the 20-member board and the new president of the organisation.

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed will open the event on Tuesday evening. The moral and financial reports will be read out and works of committees will start on May 9. Committees are as follows: the Committee of General Motion, the Structuring and Statutes Committee, the Technical Affairs Committee, the Economic Affairs Committee, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee, the Water Resources and Environment Committee, the Trade Union Education Commitee, Al Qunds Committee, the Finance Committee and the External Relations Committee.

Elections will start on Thursday evening after adoption of the moral and financial reports at a plenary session.

The farming sector in Tunisia accounts for 9.5% of the gross domestic product and employs 18% of the workforce; agricultural investments represent 10% of overall investments and 18% inclusive of the food processing industry.
