UTAP, key partner in drafting Carthage Document (Anis Kharbech)

Even though The Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (French: UTAP) had already expressed its displeasure over being excluded from April 7’s meeting at Carthage Palace that gathered the three presidencies with the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) and the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (French: UTICA) but we consider ourselves a key partner in developing the Carthage Document and we endeavours to complete all phases of the democratic transition that Tunisia is going through, UTAP Vice-President Anis Kharbech indicated.

UTAP has 540,000 farm families, i.e. 2 million farmers and fishers who have the right as the other social partners to decide the country’s fate, he pointed out in a statement to media on the fringes of a national day organised Wednesday in Tunis under the theme: the farmer is a key partner in local development.

The union did not withdraw from the Carthage Document meeting and UTAP’s president is currently assisting in a meeting to develop the Carthage Document 2.

As for the government’s performance Kharbech revealed on this matter the lack of communication between UTAP and ministers in the agricultural field, notably those of Agriculture and Trade.

We propose for the cabinet reshuffle to be comprehensive for the interest and service of the country, calling for presenting after the municipal elections (May 6) new candidates to manage the country.

According to him, a lack of reactivity of the concerned ministries exists today in relation to dealing with urgent matters facing the agricultural sector such as the implementation of the natural disasters fund, milk and tomatoes prices increases and the farmers’ debt.
