UTAP to hold national congress, May 11-8 in Tozeur

The Tunisian Union of Agriculture and Fisheries (UTAP)’s Central Council decided to hold its national congress on May 8-11 in Tozeur, a UTAP press release reads.

The press release recalled that the extended Executive Board had decided during the closing ceremony of its February 7’s ordinary meeting in Sidi Bouzid to convene shortly in order to review means to place further pressure on the authorities so as to meet their demands including the publication of the outcomes of the investigation on the shortfall in selected seed, fight against smuggling and solving the water shortage issue.

The council further recommended reviewing the procedures manual so as to eliminate all administrative and financial obstacles halting the implementation of the new Investment Law and called on the National Olive Oil Office (ONH) to act swiftly to buy quantities of olive oil in order to preserve the small farmers’ interest.

Solving the fishing sector issues, positive interaction with the measures proposed by UTAP concerning the implementation of a new social welfare system, countering lawless fishing and sea pollution and a better distribution of red tuna quotas are also among the famers’ demands.

UTAP further expressed concern over the difficulties facing the breeding sector due to drought and the smuggling phenomenon, calling for the creation of an animal health fund.

Besides, UTAP’s council also demanded a better distribution of subsidised feeds so as to meet the farmers’ real needs and limit parallel distribution channels and black marke
