Busan: The Village of Sidi Bou Saïd has been inscribed on the World Heritage List as unanimously decided by the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), held July 19-29, 2026, in Busan, Republic of Korea. This milestone was announced by the Permanent Delegation of Tunisia to UNESCO. According to Agence Tunis Afrique Presse, this inscription was initiated by President Kais Saied in February 2024 and represents the culmination of a comprehensive nomination file. The effort was monitored and coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, and prepared and supervised by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the National Heritage Institute (INP). Collaboration with all relevant ministries, structures, and stakeholders was integral to this achievement. The process also involved a focused diplomatic campaign led by Tunisia's Permanent Delegation to UNESCO bodies and the World Heritage Committee memb er states. Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Tunisia to UNESCO, Dhia Khaled, who headed the Tunisian delegation to the session, expressed gratitude to the World Heritage Committee member states for their decision. He underscored the outstanding universal value of the village, highlighting its significance as a centre of artistic, spiritual, and architectural inspiration. Khaled emphasized Tunisia's rich cultural and civilizational heritage, clarifying that this inscription is a step in Tunisia's ongoing commitment to safeguarding its cultural, natural, intangible, and documentary heritage. He reiterated Tunisia's dedication to preserving and enhancing its heritage for future generations. With this new addition, Tunisia now has ten properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, making it one of the most represented Arab and African countries on the UNESCO lists. This year alone, Tunisia achieved two major inscriptions: the "Dahar" Geopark on the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in April 2026, and the Vill age of Sidi Bou Saïd on the World Heritage List in July 2026, according to the source.
