(TAP)- Toll-free number 1899 received 5,343 reports of violence, including 769 against women, in the period running from January to late October 2022.
Reports centre around verbal abuse (661), psychological violence (616), physical violence (565), economic violence (323), sexual abuse, violence against children (96) and workplace violence (4), the Ministry of Family, Women, Children and the Elderly said as part of the observation of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
Figures show 215 callers were women with university education, 200 with secondary school education and 137 had primary education while 21 were illiterate.
Callers were mainly 247 women aged 30 to 39. A further 194 were in the 40-49 age bracket and 117 were aged 20 to 29. 71 women who called the hotline were aged 50 to 59 and 35 were aged over 60.
Eighteen women under twenty 20 used the helpline along with 87 others who did not disclose their age.
The helpline provided legal assistance to 737 victims as well as psychological support to 60 women. Sixteen victims were accommodated and protection was provided to fifteen. Social assistance was made available for two more victims in addition to medical care for another two.
