Vote in 8 polling stations in municipality of Mdhilla postponed indefinitely, says Mnasri

The voting operation in 8 polling stations in the Mdhilla municipality of Gafsa governorate will be postponed sine die, in view of the impossibility of continuing the polls in these centers, president of the Independent High Authority for the Elections (ISIE) Mohamed Tlili Mnasri said on municipal polling day Sunday.

“The voting operation in these eight polling stations will be announced later through the media,” he said at a press conference at the Convention Centre in Tunis.

The decision, taken by the ISIE Board, will be published in the Official Gazette of the Tunisian Republic, he added.

Under the Elections and Referendum Act, the Electoral Commission is empowered to redo the municipal elections in those 8 polling stations within 30 days of the date of the announcement of the preliminary results, namely May 9, 2018, he said.

According to him, the ballot papers destined for the Gafsa constituency were mistakenly forwarded to the district of Mdhilla and vice versa.

“Although the mistake was quickly rectified, the vote could not resume because of the tense atmosphere in these polling stations and citizens’ refusal to vote, he added.

In the polling station of Mdhilla, a group of voters living in the Omar Ben Slimane neighbourhood attempted on Sunday morning at 10:00 to block the voting operation to express their refusal to vote on lists in the running for the Municipality of Lala and claim the right to vote in the El Gsar constituency near Lala.

Before the creation of a municipality in Lala in 2015, this locality was attached to the municipality of El Gsar.

Some 178,438 voters are registered in the 13 constituencies of Gafsa governorate. They are called to elect 264 municipal councillors.

Some 97 candidate lists are competing in Gafsa, divided into 48 independent lists, 40 partisan and 9 coalition.
