“Voter registration for municipal elections will not be extended”, says Anouar Belhassan

“The deadline for registering on electoral rolls for the municipal elections will not be extended,” said Anouar Belhassan, vice-president of the Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE).

This decision was made following a meeting of the ISIE Council on Thursday, he told TAP.

The electoral registration operation for the municipal polls, which started on June 19, 2017, should therefore end on August 10 at midnight, pointed out.

“Until midnight on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, the electoral register lists some 5,813 million voters for the municipalities,” Anouar Belhassan said at a press conference earlier in the day.

“Some 84,410 voters have updated their electoral data and 507,415 new voters have registered to vote, he added.

Belhassan said municipal candidates will compete for 7,182 seats in 350 municipalities.

The municipal elections set for December 17, 2017 will be held on time and there is no intention to reconsider the date of these polls, he emphasised.
