Wenchi: Some school children in the Wenchi Municipality who previously walked long distances from their villages to attend school have received bicycles to ease their commute. The initiative aims to alleviate the challenges faced by these students.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Member of Parliament for Wenchi constituency, Alhaji Seidu Haruna, presented 25 bicycles to the students, who expressed their gratitude for the support. The beneficiaries, primarily girls aged between 11 and 15, hail from the farming villages of Asuofiri, Bronoso, and Ahwene and attend the Abotareye (M/A) Municipal Assembly Basic School.
In addition to the bicycles, Alhaji Haruna provided dual desks to the school to enhance the learning environment. During the presentation ceremony at Abotareye, the MP emphasized his commitment to improving educational infrastructure in underprivileged areas, aiming to eliminate distance as a barrier to education.
Alhaji Haruna expressed hope that the bicycles would help reduce absenteeism, lateness, and truancy among students. He encouraged the recipients to maintain punctuality and strive for academic success to secure a better future for themselves and their families.
The MP outlined that the bicycle presentation is part of his ‘MP-One-Village-One-JHS Student-One-Bicycle’ project, which aims to support needy and vulnerable children in deprived communities. He reiterated his focus on education and pledged to work with teachers, parents, and stakeholders to ensure all children of school-going age have access to formal education.
Mr. Patrick Arhin, the Headteacher of Abotareye M/A Basic School, expressed appreciation for the dual desks and appealed for further assistance to address the area’s water issues, as well as the need for a new Kindergarten block and toilet facilities.
