White House Joins TikTok Amid Looming Ban Deadline

Washington: The White House on Tuesday made its debut on TikTok as President Donald Trump’s deadline for a possible ban of the Chinese-owned app looms.

According to Anadolu Agency, the White House’s first TikTok post features a video of Trump stating, “Every day, I wake up determined to deliver a better life for the people all across this nation. I am your voice,” accompanied by a caption that reads: “America we are BACK! What’s up TikTok?” Shortly after its launch, the account amassed 67,000 followers, with expectations of further growth.

In 2024, the US Congress passed bipartisan legislation mandating ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to divest its US operations or face a nationwide ban. This decision stems from national security concerns regarding potential data sharing with Beijing.

However, in a June executive order, Trump extended the TikTok enforcement deadline by 90 days to September 17, marking his third delay of the potential ban. The platform, which boasts around 170 million users in the US, briefly went offline prior to Trump’s second inauguration this January but was restored following his promise to postpone enforcement.

In June, the president indicated that a “group of wealthy people” plans to purchase TikTok, contingent on approval from the Chinese government. Trump expressed confidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping would likely approve the transaction, while describing the potential buyers as “very, very wealthy people” forming a group, though he refrained from revealing if a major tech firm was involved.
